"As My Sister Knew Wolo"
By Jean von Trutzschler.

All Papas male ancestors from 1139 had been military men. His grandfather had been in the Royal Guard. His father a high military officer also but Papa would not be anything but an artist! His parents divorced when he was about 6, the deal was his mother would have him until 12 years, then his father would have him, and put him in an elite officer training school like all the other Trutzschler von Falkenstein. Papa endured it, and in the process got a good education but heavy of course on military. It so happened this 7 years comprised world war one: 1914- 1918. He absolutely refused to be in the military and was considered a disgrace in the family. His father then tried to get him into the banking business (college), but failed at that too. Finally desperate to get Papa off his hands he made contact with an agricultural school in Wisconsin. He gave him a good set of clothes and $100.00 and shipped Papa off to the U.S. After living in post WWI ravaged Germany, America seemed a wonderland to him!

The roaring 20's were in full swing, no restraints, the economy was booming as it never had before, and he was young, attractive, and exceedingly charming.

He went to Wisconsin but very shortly he found that the Ag. College was not just book learning, but required hands-on farm work! Papa put up with that a very short while before he left, working his way across America, for Hollywood, bright lights, attention, and fame! In one café he briefly worked in, he was supposed to make pancakes...he made them so good customers came in droves, until the owner found out instead of milk, he was using heavy cream! He was Fired! But he got to Los Angeles and sought out the artist colony.

Papa was a self-educated man, and the most intelligent man I've ever met, nearly all who go to universities don't go because they are passionately eager to learn. They go to further their chances for higher income: Degrees period! Papa was interested in EVERYTHING, competitive in sports and finance! He spoke five languages fluently and two tolerably, Chinese and Spanish. His memory was phenomenal, even to old age. He was always interested in finding out things he didn't already know. Some subjects he adored were music, history, art of any kind of course, current events, clothing design, cuisine, ethnic cultures and travel, cars, and motorcycles, royalty, biographies of all kinds, ideologies and counter-cultures, religions of all kinds, medicine and anatomy, photography, nature, geography, biology...I could go on and on but...I think this gives you a good idea of what kind of man Papa appeared on the surface to be.

Underneath he was a depressed very insecure frustrated child, he told me this himself. He covered these weaknesses well, but had powerful emotions and opinions underneath he revealed in his letters to me, and to his mother and sisters also.

I never saw him come close to losing his temper or even saying anything unkind to or about anyone; although he came close in telling the truth about his first marriage. He tried suicide twice.

He took offense to God, saying he put on this earth against his will, and that he was not consulted about it at all! Yet he read the Bible regularly, but only the parts that he agreed with. The Psalms, St. John's gospel and epistles. He hated Paul's writings!! Papa detested the US Gov. Yet it has been very good to him! He considered himself a citizen of the world and the U. N. was his only hope for the future! Global was the only way to go!
